Staying cool, calm and collected in the workplace

Stress is one of the most common reasons for work absences and can affect your general wellbeing. If one employee is feeling the pressure, it is likely that the rest of the office is too. This applies to many companies as stress levels rise and deadlines pile up before the winter nights begin to creep in.

With all this surrounding pressure, stress acts like a common cold as a sneeze of doubt from one employee travels to another and by the time you have finished having a panic the rest of the office has been filled with the same state of doubt and fear. This results in workers isolating themselves, fretting over their performance and ultimately wanting to remove themselves from the situation.

Nonetheless, whilst stress cannot always be avoided, there are ways to manage it. The Harvard Business Review (2019) highlighted some key points to consider:

Firstly, it is important to recognise that you are feeling stressed. Instead of generalising your anxiety, make a note of the time in which you recognise your stress levels to identify potential triggers and solutions.

Secondly, create breaks for yourself during the working day, whether it be making a cup of tea or listening to music on the commute home. Small breaks make a big difference to your stress levels and encourage better productivity for the rest of the day.

Likewise, discuss with your colleagues about ideas and strategies of how you can manage your stress, rather than encouraging panic. Breakout spaces offer a perfect opportunity to do this as they provide a relaxed and comfortable environment to work or socialise in.

Ultimately, it is important to realise you are in control of your stress. If you can recognise that there will be overwhelming situations and utilise stress in a productive way it will encourage a positive work mentality and help progress you towards your goals.
